Let’s all be real about one thing with dads— they always play it cool and seem like they don’t need anything when there's a feeling that you’re about to do something special. Regardless of the tough facade, dads are a bunch of softie’s inside. Some dads may not be as expressive as some mummas, but deep down, they do appreciate the gesture - so let’s give it to them.

Aside from birthdays or Christmas, Father’s day is that one exceptional occasion where you can be creative with showing your gratitude or surprising your dad, or the father-figure in your life, your gratitude for them and all that they do. We’ve previously explored the origins of Mother’s Day, so let’s discover how and when Father’s Day was officially recognised.

Why we celebrate Father’s Day

Just as Mother’s Day was first celebrated as a tribute to the soldiers of the U.S. Civil War, the first Father’s Day service was to recognise the fathers who were tragically killed in the Monongah Mine Disaster in 1908. However, it was Sonora Smart Dodd, the daughter of an American Civil War veteran, who pushed for the celebration of honouring fathers as a holiday, after hearing about the newly recognised Mother’s Day at a church sermon.

Father’s Day in Australia

In Australia, Father’s Day is observed every first Sunday of September. No one can exactly figure out how this became the official month of celebration as the custom has been followed since the 1930s (although this is still an ongoing debate for some with the years falling between 1920 and 1936), and we’re here to celebrate it, either way!

According to unofficial accounts, it was moved to September to take a break from “holiday fatigue” where there are weekly holidays and special events for the Aussies from the start of the year until June (when U.S Father’s Day is celebrated). New Zealand also shares the same holiday week for Father’s Day with Australia.

Get Cultured: How Father’s Day is celebrated in other parts of the world

Catholic countries in Europe such as Spain, Italy and Portugal celebrate Father’s Day every 19th of March. It’s the same day as the Feast of St. Joseph, the patron saint of fathers. However, in Germany, Father's Day is the same day as Ascension Day, which is a public holiday that is observed during the fortieth day after Easter every May.

Taiwan

Father’s Day in Taiwan is every 8th of August and is also known as Baba Jie. August 8 in Chinese can be shortened to "bā bā", which is similar to father or daddy. Although not an official holiday, families take their fathers out for dinner or give gifts to honour them - how lovely.

Brazil

Brazil’s Dia Dos Pais, celebrated every 14th of August, began in the mid-1950s to honour St. Joachim who is the father of the Virgin Mary and patron saint of fathers and grandfathers.

Thailand

In Thailand, Father’ Day is every 5th of December, which is King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s birthday. He is the country’s longest-serving monarch. This day is a public holiday and the tradition involves giving ‘dok phuttha raksa’ or canna flower, a flower that resembles a lily, to fathers and grandfathers. Thais will also wear yellow on this day, the colour that represents Monday. It’s the day that the King was born in 1927.

Iceland

Father’s Day in Iceland is called “Feðradagurinn” and is celebrated every second Sunday of November. It was first recognised in the 1930s.
