Have you ever wondered if there’s a difference between organic fruits and vegetables from the regular ones in the produce aisle of your local supermarket? You pick up your usual fix of red apples at the regular section and look over to the other side of the aisle that says ‘organic’. The regular apple that you’re holding is as red as the organic apple and perfectly shaped. You’re pretty sure both are packed with the same vitamins that’ll keep the doctor away whether it’s organic or regular. Which one will you choose?

Here’s what you need to know in order to decide on which apple you’re going to select.

The word organic defines how farmers grow and process their agricultural products through the following methods:

  • They should not use artificial or synthetic fertilisers to grow their organic crops.
  • They should only use organic herbicides and natural pesticides to control weeds and pests.
  • They should not use genetic technology to their crops to produce genetically modified (GM) foods.

Benefits of organic fruits and vegetables

When you choose to buy organic fruits and vegetables, you’re not only taking care of your health but also the environment. Organic agriculture is sustainable and reduces greenhouse effects and global warming. Farmers engaged in organic farming practice meticulous methods and non-toxic materials in order to grow the food well. This is the reason why organic food is 10% to 20% more expensive (fair is fair). Just imagine all the love and care they put into the crops that go into our bodies when we buy organic food. We grow extra healthy with mindful organic food choices!

Here are two fun facts about going organic:

  • Regular and organic produce have the same level of nutrients, but did you know that organic fruits and vegetables have 20% to 40% more antioxidants than the regular ones? Antioxidants protect our body’s cells from ageing and other diseases.
  • Australia has 35.7 million hectares of organic agricultural area making it the largest organic farmland in the world! Argentina places second with 3.6 million hectares and China ranks third with 3.1 million hectares.

3 delicious recipes for organic juice

One way to enjoy organic fruits and vegetables aside from using them as ingredients for a variety of dishes, appetisers, salads and desserts is to try organic juice. Some people drink organic juice as part of their regular diet because it contains natural vitamins and minerals that the body needs that boosts the immune system (it’s also an easier way to down your fruits and veggies, especially for kids). Moreover, it is rich in antioxidants that slows the ageing process. Drinking organic juice regularly has also been said to make your skin glow (win-win).

Here are 3 homemade organic juice recipes:

Glow healthy with Carrot Juice

Carrot juice is one of the popular organic juices out there. They’re not too sweet but definitely tasty. Carrots contain beta carotene that keeps our eyes healthy and prevents eye diseases. It also protects the skin from UV radiation and gives it a healthy glow. Carrots also contain fibre that is good for digestion.

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium carrots
  • Cucumber (half-cup, diced) or 1 piece lemon
  • 2 tbsp of honey or sugar
  • ½ cup water

Method:

  • Add all the ingredients in a blender with ½ cup of water
  • Blend on high if you want a thick smoothie or pureed carrot juice
  • Use a strainer to remove the pulp
  • Add lemon juice to add brightness to the flavour
  • You can also add other flavour variations to your carrot juice such as ginger, pineapple or pear

Immune-boosting Bloody Mary (non-alcoholic)

Start your day right with a glass of immune-boosting Bloody Mary aka tomato juice. Tomato juice is rich in vitamin C, B vitamins and potassium. It is also said to reduce the risk of heart disease and blood clotting.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups chopped tomatoes
  • 1 cup baby spinach
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric
  • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup water

Method:

  • Add all the ingredients in a blender with ½ cup of water until smooth

Gut-healing Celery Juice

Celery is highly nutritious and improves digestion. It contains vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin K and potassium. Celery juice activates the gut by raising stomach acid that helps in breaking down protein especially if you’re on a high protein diet. Low stomach acid makes us feel tired so drinking a glass of celery juice helps us keep us active within the day.

Ingredients:

  • 1 bunch of organic celery chopped into 1 inch pieces (cut off the base and the stalks)
  • 1 piece lemon

Method:

  • Add the celery in a blender with ½ cup of water
  • Blend on high if you want it thick or pureed
  • Add lemon juice to add brightness to the flavour
